Severe Bloating After Thyroidectomy

11/30/2011

Question:

Since I`ve had my thyroid out I have a problem with severe constipation and bloating especially in the upper chest area. What canĀ I do to eliminate this. I`ve tried everything but it comes back worse. Could this be related to my thyroid or should I see a digestive doctor?

Answer:

Your doctor should be monitoring a blood test called a “TSH” or “Thyroid Stimulating Hormone” level. If that test is normal then I don’t think adjusting your thyroid medication will change the bloating and constipation. If you have not discussed the bloating in the upper chest area with your doctor, you should do that. There is an outside chance that it could be related to your heart, not your intestinal tract.
