Cynthia Gale Heard, OD

Cynthia Heard received her Doctor of Optometry degree in 1992 from The Ohio State University College of Optometry (TOSUCO). She completed a postgraduate residency in Geriatric and Vision Rehabilitation at the Birmingham VAMC, which is affiliated with the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry. Dr. Heard is currently an Assistant Professor of Clinical Optometry at TOSUCO. Her professional areas of interest are diabetes education, nutrition and eye health, ocular disease management, and vision care for individuals with behavioral conditions.

Dr. Heard is a member of the American Optometric Association (AOA), National Optometric Association (NOA), Ohio Optometric Association (OOA), Central Ohio Optometric Association (COOA), the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) Podiatrist, Pharmacist, Optometrist, and Dentist (PPOD) Workgroup, the American Public Health Association, Optometric Retina Society, and the American Academy of Optometry. Dr. Heard received the Epsilon Psi Epsilon Outstanding Clinical Instructor Award in 1997 and the NOA Optometrist of the Year in 1998.

She is a volunteer for AOA Vision USA, OOA RealEyes Classroom Initiative, and TOSU Office of Minority Affairs Mentoring Program as a Professional Mentor. She has also served as a clinical and senior examiner since 2001 for the National Board of Examination in Optometry Clinical Skills Examination. Dr. Heard served as Central Ohio Optometric Association Zone Governor in 2002. She was the 19th NOA President from 2003-05. She is currently the Immediate Past President.
