Dr. Kevin D. Cooper joined Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals Case Medical Center in 1995 from prior positions at the University of Michigan, and the National Institutes of Health, and training at Oregon Health Sciences University and the University of Florida. He has developed a highly matrixed program that intersects seven geographical clinical sites with teaching and research activities which span basic laboratory, translational, and clinical trial investigations. With interests in immunologically-mediated skin diseases and photomedicine/photoimmunology, Dr. Cooper has been continuously funded since 1986 and has published over 300 papers and chapters. He enjoys mentoring faculty, residents, fellows, and students. |
Dr. Cooper is the Professor and Chair of the Department of Dermatology at both Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine and University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC) in Cleveland, Ohio. He is a Staff Physician for the Dermatology Service at the Cleveland VA Hospital. Dr. Cooper is the Director of the NIAMS Skin Diseases Research Center at CWRU, focusing on creating advances in skin diseases, and the Director of the Murdough Family Center for Psoriasis. He is Director of the NIAMS Psoriasis Center of Research Translation (CORT) at CWRU, performing lab-based, translational, and Phase I investigator – initiated clinical research where research team findings are moved from the “lab bench to the patient”.
Dr. Cooper was elected President of the Council of Clinical Chairs (from 2007), and has been on the Boards of Trustees for UHCMC since 2007, and for University Hospital Medical Group since 2008. He has been a member of CWRU School of Medicine Research Committee since 1996, and is a member of the Dean’s Advisory Committee.
Dr. Cooper is currently President of the Association of Professors of Dermatology, Past President of the Society for Investigative Dermatology, and has chaired a number of American Academy of Dermatology Committees and Councils, including the Scientific Assembly Committee. He has provided leadership for patient advisory boards including the National Eczema Association, Cutaneous Lymphoma Foundation, and the National Psoriasis Foundation. He is a co-founder of Fluence Therapeutics, a start-up biomedical company created to develop photodynamic therapy. Dr. Cooper serves on NIH Advisory Groups and as a reviewer for NIH review panels.
Currently the conference organizer and sponsor of the Murdough Family Center for Psoriasis Symposium: Comparative Effectiveness Research & Implementation (September, 2011), Dr. Cooper is also on the Steering Committee for the Mechanisms of Inflammatory Alopecia meeting to be held in October, 2011, in Bethesda, Maryland. He has previously organized Programs for the APD, the AAD, the ADA, and the Symposium for Biology of the Skin.
For relaxation, Dr. Cooper enjoys family activities, particularly if they involve snowboarding, xc skiing, surfing, hiking, golf, or the dog.
