Anthony J Furlan, MD

Dr. Anthony J. Furlan is currently the Gilbert W Humphrey Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is also the Co-Director of the University Hospitals Neurological Institute.

His research interests include Epidemiology of Cerebrovascular Disease, Stroke Therapy, Clinical Trials, Heart and Brain Research, and Thrombolysis. Dr. Furlan was instrumental in developing the field of interventional stroke therapy in which patients with acute strokes receive clot-dissolving drugs called thrombolytic agents that can help restore circulation to the brain.

Dr. Furlan chaired the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Task Force on Hospital Care of Acute Stroke which helped establish hospital guidelines for administration of the clot-dissolving drug tPA. He was co-chair the National Stroke Association Stroke Center Network; founding member of the Brain Attack Coalition; former member of the American Stroke Association Executive Stroke Council, and is a current member of the association's Stroke Center Advisory Committee.

Dr. Furlan holds a BS degree from Loyola University and an MD degreee from the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. Following a medical internship and Neurology residency at the Cleveland Clinic, he completed a Cerebrovascular Research Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in 1978. He became a member of the professional staff of the Department of Neurology at the Cleveland Clinic in 1978 and assumed the Chairmanship of Neurology at Case Western Reserve University in January, 2008. He is board certified in Neurology and Vascular Neurology. Dr. Furlan is a member of the editorial board of the journal Stroke, and has published more than 150 research papers in peer-reviewed journals, and multiple books and book chapters.

Dr. Furlan is the recipient of the American Heart Association 2000 William M. Feinberg Award for Excellence in Clinical Stroke; the 2004 JCAHO Codman award for improving patient outcomes through systems approaches to stroke care; the 2005 Cleveland Clinic Champion of Quality Award; the 2005 Anthem Impact Business Award; and the 2006 American Heart Association Pacesetter Award for excellence in stroke treatment and research. At Case Western Reserve University he recently created the Neurological Outcomes Center and established the Willard Brown Chair in Neurological Outcomes Research.
