Be Well: Young and Obese

The Be Well: Young and Obese documentary shares the stories of Northeast Ohio families and organizations that wrestle with the consequences of obesity every day, and explores some positive measures that have started to change the direction of this devastating epidemic.

  • One in three children in the United States is overweight or obese. 
  • In Ohio close to 20% of children age 10 and over are obese.
  • Children who are obese are more than twice as likely to die before the age of 55.
  • One in three children born in 2000 will develop diabetes sometime in his or her lifetime.

From the womb to the school cafeteria, into our homes and neighborhoods, viewers explore the insidious nature of childhood obesity and the courage it takes to combat it. Doctors and public health experts also weigh in with advice and tips for parents committed to fight the fat.

Follow 11-year-old Jake through his experience with the IMPACT research study and learn how he and his family are using mini-experiments to make positive changes in their daily habits. Chapter 5: Before, During, and After Pregnancy  

Meet 10-year old Briana and her mom who are part of groundbreaking research efforts to learn how obesity may start in the womb – and even before conception. Visit a lab where scientists are piecing together the molecular pathways by which obese pregnant women may set up their unborn babies to become obese children. pregnancy
