Question:

I have bone growth in the lower jaw. Are there cases where the bone growth leaves little room for the tongue? Is the surgery difficult and should I consider having it sooner than later in life. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Does the surgery require hospitalization? Thanks

Answer:

By your description it sounds that you are referring to Lingual Tori. If this is the case, this benign process requires no treatment unless there are functional limitations as a result of the size or site.  If they start to invade the space under the tongue, creating limitation with speech or creating such undercut that food gets trapped under them, then removal is a clear indication. 

Typically, this procedure is done in the office on an outpatient basis, however depending on the patient’s age, medical history, etc., your surgeon may elect to do it in the hospital setting.  In terms of timing, if it is already causing you problems, waiting longer is not going to help you any.
