Diet after gallbladder removal

06/22/2007

Question:

I need to know, what foods, and spices to avoid?

Answer:

In the treatment of gallbladder disease, a low-fat diet is recommended to give symptomatic relief. Fat tolerance varies from person to person, therefore the diet needs to be tailored to your needs. For example, some people report that they are more comfortable if pork, eggs, fried foods, pastries, and other high-fat foods are excluded. Others find it difficult to tolerate spicy foods, onions, cabbage, cucumbers, and a few other vegetables. If you have had a cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder), then for several weeks or months afterwards, a low-fat diet may be used: including non-fat milk and dairy products, lean meats, vegetables, fruits, whole or enriched grains while avoiding anything fried, processed meats, cheese, cream, butter, egg yolks, non-dairy creamer, gravy, ice cream, & pastries. Eventually, you may return to an unrestricted diet. If the you are overweight, weight loss is also recommended. For more individualized help, I recommend that you see a registered dietitian (RD).
