Mucinex D

08/30/2007

Question:

My 82-year old mother has severe MG which is now stabilized and controlled by 10mg prednisone every other day–in addition to imuran and mestinon.

She sometimes suffers from post-nasal drip which makes her voice hoarse and scratchy until she coughs up the phlegm. It`s more of an ongoing nuisance than anything else, but I`m wondering whether you think that MucinexD would be safe for a person with MG who is taking the above prescribed medicines–in addition to daily vitamins and calcium.

MucinexD contains 600mg Guaifenisin and 60 mg Psuedophedrine HCI.

In your opinion, would it be safe for my mother to take MucinexD for her post-nasal drip problem?

Answer:

I would recommend that you discuss this medicine with your treating neurologist. He/she knows all aspects of your mom’s care to make sure it is OK. I would also recommend that your mom asks him/her about whether or not the mestinon may be causing some of the congestion and to see if a dosage adjustment is warranted. Thanks for your question.
