Do I Qualify for a Lung Transplant?

09/10/2007

Question:

I have COPD and am on oxygen 24/7. Do I qualify medically for a lung transpant? I am on Medicaid. Do they cover a transplant?

Answer:

Many factors are considered when assessing a patient for the suitability of lung transplantation.  Other co-existing medical conditions may preclude one from being a transplant candidate.  However, with respect to the type of lung disease that is present, advanced COPD is the most common disease for which transplant is performed.  Medicaid typically covers many of the costs, but it may be necessary for consultation with a social worker experienced in the costs of medical procedures.
