Genital Itch

11/11/2008

Question:

My 5 years old daughter has been complaining about itch in her vagina. I don`t know what to do. She seems to get pretty irritaded when it itches. I am not sure if has something to do with the detergent for cloths that I use. Help me please.

Answer:

There are several causes for the itching, but none are serious. One cause is pinworms, which can be checked for by the pediatrician. Occasionally it is related to detergent. In addition, once a girl begins scratching the area, it seems to itch even more. I would have her avoid baths, and shower instead. In addition, I would not use soap in the genital area for the time being. If there is a lot of irritation in the genital area, application of Bagbalm or Dr. Smith’s Diaper Cream often is effective.
