Benzocain in Thoat Lozenge

12/21/2009

Question:

Dear Pharmacist,

When I use throat lozenge and I find out that it contains Benzocain or Lignocain to stop pain. Is Benzocain or Lignocain or other local anesthesic in throat lozenge absorbed into blood circulation if we use to much throat lozenge?

Answer:

The amount of local anesthetic that is contained in throat lozenges should not pose any risk, as long as the patient follows the directions & does not exceed the recommended amounts.  For example, benzocaine found in OTC lozenges is minimally absorbed into the blood stream and should not be a problem unless a patient consumes amounts greater than what is labeled by the manufacturer.
