Question:

I am 80 years old with slightly elevated eye pressure and early signs of dry macular degeneration and cataract. Are there any contraindicates if I take daily a multivitamin tablet, 1200 mg omega fish oil tablet and 1000 mg flax seed oil tablet.

Answer:

In regards to the 1200mg omega fish oil tablet, it is safe to take but do not take more than 3 grams a day.

There has been some research with flax seed being used for dry eye syndrome in patients with Sjogren’s syndrome that shows taking flaxseed oil 1-2 grams daily for 6 months significantly reduces ocular inflammation and decreases symptoms. There is a risk combining flax seed oil with fish oil as it may cause low blood pressure and increase your risk of having a fall.

The multiple vitamin should be okay but without knowing your other medications, I cannot give you a definite answer.

If you have any other medications that you take, please consult your local pharmacist for any possible interactions. If you need immediate information, your local pharmacist may be in the best position to assist you.
