BUN and Creatinine Levels

06/25/2010

Question:

I received┬ámy blood work from the doctor. My GFR is 48, creatinine level is 1.3, and BUN is 14. Can you explain these levels to me and tell me what is a normal level? I am female, 5`7″ and weight 175.

Answer:

According to the National Kidney Foundation, normal results for GFR range from 90 – 120 mL/min. Older people will have lower normal GFR levels, because GFR decreases with age. I cannot know why you have a low GFR as there are multiple causes, some are reversible. Please review this with your doctor as a GFR of 48 is lower than I would expect, even with age.
