Why Has My Period Been So Irregular?

03/04/2011

Question:

Last month my period was lighter than normal. I did not have any of my regular PMS symptoms. No cramping or anything else. I used maybe 2 tampons and my period lasted a week long(which is normally how long I`m on my period I was just stating for how irregular it was.) It was more like spotting. This month I am late. I am about a week late. Usually for about a week before my period I have all the PMS the cramping and bloating. This month I have none of that I am about a week late. What could be wrong? Any suggestions on what I should do?

Answer:

Thanks for asking such an important question. It's hard to say since I don't have all the information I need to make a judgement but here are some possibilities:

First; Is there a chance that you are pregnant? That might be the first cause.

Second; Are you taking any birth control medications or had an IUD inserted that might have an effect on your periods?

Third; Have you started on any other medications that might be helping to deal with the PMS symptoms? That could affect your menstrual flow.

Fourth; Are you under increased and or unusual stress- that could also have an effect on your period. Best advice is to check for pregnancy and if that's not the cause, go to see your provider.

If you are pregnant, you need to see your provider as soon as possible to discuss your prenatal care. Hope this helps. All the best.
