Need to gain weight after cholecystectomy

03/18/2008

Question:

I am a 41 year-old female. My gallbladder was removed this past week due to an 8% ejection fraction and symptoms which included nausea, cramps and bloating. My symptoms started 2 months ago and I have now lost 15 pounds. I was only 110 lbs. to begin with so I am concerned. I need to gain weight back but not sure what to eat now that gallbladder has been removed. I am experiencing weakness and diarrhea. Is this normal? Surgery was 5 days ago. Any advice on weight gaining strategy?

Answer:

If you are having problems after surgery you should visit your surgeon. In terms of eating, you should be able to eat all types of food. Initially, certain things will cause cramps and diarrhea. You will learn by trial and error what you can and cannot eat. Most have problems with fatty foods for about 2-3 weeks and then are able to eat all things. You should gain back your weight over time, if you do not make sure to see your doctor.
