What is blood vessel attenuation of the eyes?

07/15/2008

Question:

My eye doctor said I had OD and OS-mild blood vessel attenuation in my eyes. What does this mean? What causes it and how is it treated. She also said I have cataracts and dry eyes. I am a female 55 years of age.

Answer:

Blood vessel attenuation describes changes in the appearance of the retinal blood vessels that line the back part of the eyes. Narrowing of the blood vessels can occur when blood pressure has been high for an extended period of time. Other conditions, such as diabetes, may also cause changes in the appearance of the retinal vessels.

Evaluation by your eye doctor and primary care physician is recommended to monitor eye health and systemic health. Keeping a good diet and exercise plan are excellent ways to help maintain good blood pressure and good overall health.
