12/30/2008

Question:

I have been told that a calcide granuloma USUALLY are from an infection. I worked for at a plant that produced U235 & U238 for the U S Government. Could exposure to radition or chemicals used in production cause a Calcified granuloma?

Answer:

Thank you for your question. Yes, calcified granulomas are usually benign (but not always) and common causes include infection and occupational exposures such as beryllium and silica. Radiation and chemical exposures can cause several short and long term effects to the lung. Given your concerns, I would suggest that you discuss with your provider.
