Can MG patients have sex?

09/28/2009

Question:

Having sex is good or bad for people who suffering from MG?

Answer:

Good or bad are terms that I usually avoid when discussing sexual activity. Sex can be safe for someone with myasthenia gravis if they do not have respiratory weakness or weakened muscles in the head and neck that might cause problems when they become fatigued. Sexual activity also is not just one type of activity so it is hard to generalize. This is an individual question, and should be discussed with your treating physicians to make sure they also feel that your breathing safety is sufficient for sexual activity. Be willing to discuss what sexual activity you intend to participate in and make sure you have the breathing capacity to not cause a problem.
