What Makes Amblyopia Progress?

01/26/2010

Question:

Hello, I am a 22 year old male and I have amblyopia. The sight in my right eye is weak and while I haven’t noticed any vision loss in that eye over the years, I was wondering if amblyopia can worsen with age?

Also, can things like computer monitors, diet, sun exposure and the like cause amblyopia to worsen? Thank you.

Answer:

Sun exposure can cause long-term harm to eyes, amblyopic or otherwise. Wear protection! Likewise, a healthy diet can preserve your vision. Computers are unlikely to affect your eyes.

Amblyopia is typically stable, although eyes can improve if treated, particularly if previously untreated.
